I Failed Again, Jason

I’m disturbed.

I left politics months ago to focus on the first six months of my startup business, a wise decision which put me in a great position

Now, I’ve returned to find the place a mess. The Left, in charge of both the state and federal government is making poor choices, whether it be the “Worst Bill Ever” on Capitol Hill or secret, closed-door, one-party meetings in Dover.  We’ll get to that later.

But the Right is no better off. You would think they’d get the message when 40% of the country identifies as conservative but the opposition party is in control. The problem is not conservatism. The problem is conservatives: the birthers, the purgers, the absolutists, the Beckites, you name it. It’s the people, and their general attitude, not the policies.

Somebody asked me the other day if I was a conservative. My answer to them was that I didn’t even know what conservative meant anymore. The redefinition of conservative over the last 5 years has left me without a solid understanding of what the term means. After all, it was self-styled conservatives that blew up the deficit. It was self-styled conservatives that gave us TARP, Part D, NCLB, and generally failed to deal with the entitlement apocalypse that’s coming.

It was the ‘pure free markets’ crowd that gave us derivatives and unchecked greed on Wall Street. How do I know it was the ‘pure free markets’ crowd? I used to be one, and I was cheering them on. But the market wasn’t free. It was rigged, and the ‘too big to fail’ bunch abused it and suffered no consequences, while middle-class people & small business owners did suffer. So I’m ready for some regulations that protect consumers and small businesses against the banks & Wall Street. And if you’re too big to fail, you’re too big to exist.

Glenn Beck has emerged as the media figurehead of this new conservative movement. Sarah Palin has apparently emerged as its political leader. I have absolutely no respect for either, and I think both severely damage the cause of the center-right in America. And by center-right, I mean those on the right who actually want to participate in governing, actually have a say and attempt move the needle back toward the right. I’m not talking about the absolutist cultists who want to purge anyone who strays from their doctrine.

So what does that make me? I don’t give a damn. I’m through with trying to adhere to labels.

So call me what you want. I’m taking it issue by issue.

I do know this, however. I’m back.

(EDITED: Originally, I used the statement “I’m through with labels.” Obviously, in today’s political climate, there are many labels. So, I will be dealing with them, maybe even creating some. But I will no longer attempt to clear my ideas through any sort of mental checklist of somebody else’s definition of “Republican” or “Conservative.” Thanks to my good buddy anonone for helping me clarify.)

“So what does that make me? I don’t give a damn. I’m through with labels.”
You’re a free man that is marching forward as an individual.

Welcome back!

Dave November 3, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Kilroy! Thanks, man.

RSmitty November 3, 2009 at 8:58 pm

#53.
Feh. You ain’t half of what you used to be. ;-)

Dave November 3, 2009 at 8:58 pm

Older and wiser. And wider.

RSmitty November 3, 2009 at 8:59 pm

I do see that you still master the clock setting on wordpress. When did you move into the Central Time Zone?

Tom D'Alessandro November 4, 2009 at 7:59 am

Welcome back Dave! I completely agree with you. In order to be successful, we’ve got to stop forcing everyone to drink the Kool Aid. The “far right” has no better standing in the political landscape than the “far left”.

Let’s open up a debate about how to move the needle right, not pegging it there.

Dave November 4, 2009 at 8:02 am

Thanks, Tom. You are always welcome here, and I look forward to your input.

Hube November 4, 2009 at 8:06 am

What a laugh — the DLers all in here offering Dave “advice.” That’s like Jim Jones telling you what flavor Kool-Aid you should drink.

RSmitty November 4, 2009 at 9:05 am

Hey! The clock is fixed! Nice touch! :-P

DL’ers offering political advice to Dave would be like Hube offering political advice to DL’ers, point taken; HOWEVER, off-topic of the comment, but a comment I have no problem making, while Dave has his own brand very well established in blogging and publication, DL absolutely has earned credit/respect in terms of discussion on making an established presence on the net. Whether you like them or not, if you think they don’t have a significant brand at this level, then you aren’t being objective.

Wow, and here I just thought I sucked as a Republican (couldn’t seem to agree on more and more issues) but wasn’t ready to completely jump sides in registration. After you left delawarepolitics.net , I kept reading… and slowly became more unsure if I was a Republican. I felt like the “floater” … not willing to endorse every social program/entitlement as a fix but also not ready to condemn gays to hell and damnation. I don’t expect to agree with all issues on either side … but I am not feeling a worthiness to either side’s application. Good to see you back!

YES!!! I’ve been tossed a lifeline. Thanks for coming back as a re-defined Dave of reflection and deliberation–hopefully with strategic results of “righting” this ship. I am sick and tired of Republicanism being defined as social/mores positioning of a party as the predominant banner of the message. More disappointing, is our VERY OWN have held that banner, just as high to the cheers of a few, and the delight of every anti-Republican watching the party self-destruct. Talk about eating your own. I don’t want people “whispering” to me, “I’m really a Republican”, because they know I am one, and understand the pariah our brand brings now. I have no choice–I’m outed–former Republican candidate for office. Consider it a tattoo. But before those days…who knew? She was just a gal who did things because it was the responsible, humanistic thing to do. Not unlike the great Independents, Libertarians, Democrats, and fellow Republicans I have come to meet who later self-identified. So, change parties? Why bother. But I will make darn sure I will change out the people who are wrongly defining my party at this critical time in history–and that ticket can split a hundred ways on election day–but it is my responsibility to see it is thwarted at the primary level. Welcome back Dave, thanks for the fresh air, and the new set of “specs” you’ll be keeping on the GOP.

anonone November 8, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Hey Joanne,

Your party defined itself by its actions of the last 30 years and the consequent disastrous results they left behind every time they have been in power. And they are further defined by their leadership today: Bush, Limbaugh, Palin, Beck, Gnigrich, McCain, etc. The only reason that you may be tiring of the “social/mores positioning of a party as the predominant banner” is because it isn’t working as well anymore.

Wake up. Your party isn’t being defined wrongly by anybody. Everybody can see what a failure it has been when it has been allowed to govern.

Dave November 8, 2009 at 5:55 pm

a1 — I’m over it. If you want to talk about the history of the GOP, go do it over there. Everyone who can read knows where you stand and what your opinion is.

anonone November 8, 2009 at 6:02 pm

You may be “over it” but I’m not and neither is the country. Are you trying to act like the last 8 years didn’t happen?

You’re acting like the kid who kills his parents and then asks for mercy from the sentencing judge because he’s an orphan.

People need to be reminded of the failure of republican conservative governance over-and-over again.

Dave November 8, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Your indictment assumes facts not necessarily in the record, and vastly oversimplifies a very complicated matter.

Fact is, you and I could go 12 full rounds and then some on the topic, but I ain’t got the time, and my focus is on the present and the future.

RSmitty November 8, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Plus, where’s the Flav-o-Flav jewelry you promised Dave? I want pictures!!!

Dave November 8, 2009 at 7:13 pm

Seriously. No elephant jewelry, no debate.

Dave November 8, 2009 at 7:17 pm

By the way, thanks to Joanne! I missed you, too!
