GOP Sweeps Governor Races in NJ, VA

by Dave on November 3, 2009

Bob McDonnell & Chris Christie have been elected the Governors of Virginia and New Jersey, respectively. A big night for the GOP, picking up two governorships held by the Democrats, including the seat held currently by the head of the DNC.

What does it mean?

1. The health care legislation has a bumpy road ahead. The key to the final passage and shape of the health care bill hinges on the support of conservative Democrats. They are, as a group, much less confident right now than they were 24 hours ago.

2. The President doesn’t have the magic touch when his name isn’t on the ballot. He campaigned heavily for Jon Corzine, to no avail.

3. People are pushing back against the policies of those in charge. A lot of frustration and anger in those exit polls.

4. Fat Republican white guys are cool, at least for a day. Woot!

Another interesting note: If Bill Owens holds on in NY23, each of those “big 3″ seats will switch parties. Add to that the close race in NYC, and you should probably add every incumbent in America to the Endangered Political Species list.

Finally, my message to Gov.-elect McDonnell and Gov.-elect Christie: You won. Now get it done. Use center-right ideas to make things better.
